boot - a tax term identifying any additional value exchanged in an Internal Revenue Code Section 1031 exchange of like-kind properties to make the transaction balance. For example, if Abel exchanges his commercial building for Baker's apartment building plus $100,000, the $100,000 may be considered boot and would be immediately taxable. See also Section 1031 exchange.
