Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) - a package of federal legislation enacted in 1974 designed to complement and extend the Consumer Credit Protection Act of 1969. The ECOA provides that credit must be extended without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, marital status, or source of income (such as alimony and social security payments).
