easement by prescription - a method of acquiring a property interest personally through long-standing usage or custom adverse to the actual property owner's interest and under claim of right or color of title. The continued usage is restricted to the original claimant and his or her ancestors or grantees. One example is the use over a statutory number of years by owner Abel of a path to the beach over owner Baker's land, even though Abel has alternative access to the beach over a less convenient public road.
