escape clause - a provision in a contract allowing a party to cancel the contract if some specified contingency is not satisfied. Typical examples in real estate contracts are financing contingencies, inspection contingencies, and clear title contingencies. Properly exercised, the use of an escape clause is not a breach of contract. See also contingency .
