Federal Fair Housing Act - a 1968 federal law, enacted as a Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act to prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, gender, national origin, familial origin, familial status, handicap, or religion in the sale or lease of most dwellings and vacant land intended to be used for dwellings. The Act prohibits a wide range of behavior linked to these categories, such as refusal to sell to a person, refusal by real estate agents to show a property, denial of loans by a lender, and advertising that indicates a discriminatory preference. The Act does not prohibit discrimination in other types of real estate transactions, such as commercial and industrial properties, although other civil rights laws may generally cover discrimination in these settings.
