gift letter - a personal letter, usually addressed to a lender, in which the gift giver verifies that all or some of the down payment used by the borrower has indeed been a gift. It is designed to prevent purchasers from secretly borrowing their down payment. Gift letters are most credible when the giver is closely related to the borrower.
