grading - the act of moving earth to change the natural slope and contour of a lot. Rough grading raises or lowers the level of the site and corrects the pitch. Finish grading fine-tunes the rough grade, adjusts for drainage, and prepares the site for any structures that will be built. If earth is removed from a site, leaving a natural surface, the lot is said to be "cut." If soil or other material is added to the site, the lot is said to be "fill." See also cut and fill.
