handicap - defined in the Fair Housing Act and in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as a physical or mental impairment that substantially interferes with at least one major life activity. Federal and state laws prohibit discrimination against persons with a designated handicap in the sale or lease of residential property. The definition has been expanded to include mental handicaps, such as drug addiction, physical diseases such as AIDS, and mental illnesses such as schizophrenia.
