land grant - (also called land patent) the act of granting or the land described in a grant from the government for the purpose of serving the public good. Examples are the late nineteenth century grants of land to railroads for westward expansion of the United States, opening of "wilderness areas" for population, such as those characterized by the Oklahoma land rushes, or property given to establish a college or university.
