nonconforming loan - a loan whose amount is in excess of that established by those entities, such as the Federal National Mortgage Association (FNMA or Fannie Mae) and others, that purchase such loans in the secondary mortgage market. This amount is subject to periodic review and change, and has been rising irregularly over the past several years. See also conforming loan and jumbo loan.
