participation certificate - a mortgage-backed security sold by the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac) to finance the purchase of mortgages in the secondary market. Certificates are sold for a pool of mortgages or for a single large mortgage to institutions and individuals in denominations of $100,000 and more. The payment of principal and interest is guarantied by the issuer.
