rate index - any index established by, or designated in, an adjustable or variable interest rate loan as the reference or benchmark for changing the indexed rate component of the interest rate. Examples of a rate index are the LIBOR, 11th District cost of funds, moving average of one-year T-bills, the prime lending rate, and others. See also variable rate mortgage.
