tenancy by the entirety - an estate created by the conveyance to a husband and wife with the right of survivorship. Upon the death of either the husband or the wife, the title to the entire property passes to the survivor to the exclusion of the deceased?s other heirs. The termination of this estate requires the joint action of both husband and wife. Compare with joint tenancy, which may be broken by the conveyance of an interest by either the husband or wife. States usually do not recognize both tenancy by the entirety and joint tenancy. See also tenancy.
