termite - a type of wood-destroying insect. Drywood termites live in hives above ground and may swarm periodically. Subterranean termites build underground colonies and travel in tubes constructed of mud above the surface to prey on wood structures. Both types can cause considerable damage to wood structures and are very common in the southwestern United States, although they may be found in every state.
