unit-in-place method ? an appraisal method for calculating the replacement cost of a structure. The installed prices of each individual component of the structure are estimated on a per square foot basis, than added together and multiplied by the total square feet of the structure. For example, labor and materials for framing, roof, tile, carpet, painting, and the like would be estimated, then totaled and multiplied by the total square footage to determine the replacement cost of a house.
