wasting assets - (1) any asset that tends to deteriorate and diminish in value over time. Most improvements to land are wasting assets, because they will not last forever. The land itself is deemed to have a potentially unlimited life. (2) assets such as oil, lumber, minerals, etc. that are diminishing or being depleted. Includes the diminishing of patent rights and fixed-term franchises.
