well - a pit or hole dug or drilled into the ground, usually to reach and extract water, gas, or oil. An artesian well is a well in which water flows up under pressure, as in a fountain. Access by well to a sufficient supply of fresh water can be a significant determinant of value for rural land. Many states include clauses in real estate purchase contracts that allow the buyer to test the production and capacity of a well before committing to purchase a property.
