witness - (1) to sign one's name to a document such as a deed or a will for the purpose of attesting to the authenticity of a document or to the authenticity of the signature of other persons. See also attest. (2) the person providing such testament; (3) a person whose declaration under oath is received as testimony in an official proceeding, such as a trial or a hearing.
