Real Estate Definition - lateral and subjacent support
lateral and subjacent support - the support received for one parcel of land from another. Adjoining landowners have a duty to each other to do nothing to their own property that will cause damage to the adjoining property. This includes matters such as excavations that weaken a neighbor's building or hillside, removal of minerals which causes subsidence, or overwatering one's landscape to such a degree that the adjoining parcel may flood or suffer subsurface erosion.
