Real Estate Definition - tenancy in severalty

tenancy in severalty - (also called sole tenancy) ownership by one person or entity. The confusing term derives from the notion that the owner?s interest is severed from that of other persons. An individual may hold sole title in several forms: as a single (never married) man or woman; as an unmarried (divorced or widowed) man or woman; or as a married man or woman as his or her sole and separate property. See also joint tenancy, tenancy, and tenants in common.
